Possible Olympic Clash With Femke Bol? Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone To Race 400m Hurdles At US Trials

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is returning to the race that has defined her career by competing in the 400m hurdles at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. The story was confirmed by one of her agents and her coach, Bobby Kersee. In the 400-meter hurdles, McLaughlin-Levrone holds the world record and has the second-fastest open 400-meter time ever—48.74.

Will Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Once More Break the World Record in the 400-meter Hurdles?

Since winning her third global gold in a world-record-setting 50.68 at the 2022 global Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, McLaughlin-Levrone has not participated in the 400-meter hurdles. Between 2021 and 2022, when the world record stood at 52.16, she smashed it four times. After turning her focus to the open 400m in her 2023 campaign, McLaughlin-Levrone won the U.S. title with a PR of 48.74, which is the second-fastest time in global history. However, a knee injury led McLaughlin-Levrone to terminate her season and miss out on competing in the global Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Femke Bol, A Possible Upset?

Femke Bol, a Netherlands athlete who has won two gold medals in the 400m hurdles, kept improving. The fact that McLaughlin-Levrone has committed to competing in the 400m hurdles this season in defense of her Olympic title is another step toward an exciting prospective clash in Paris. In 2023, she lowered her PR multiple times from 52.27 to 51.45 and won the world gold in Budapest.

McLaughlin-Levrone made her track debut this season in the 100-meter hurdles (12.71), and she most recently followed that up on May 4 with a 22.38 effort over the 200-meter distance. This year, she returned to the track in the Mount SAC Relays to compete in the 4x100-meter relay. She has also participated in the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, and on June 9 in the meet series in New York, she might run the 400 meters.
